Markets to medicine

If you find the time to shop, it will be worth your while as almost everything is cheaper than at home.

It might be difficult not to get carried away but if you do shop until you drop, be assured that the excellent Spanish healthcare system will be there to pick you up again!

Bargain hunters love the Costa Blanca

If you can wait, it’s best to leave your summer clothes shopping until you get here - then you can afford a new pair of sandals as well.

In addition to all the essentials in town and major supermarkets in all the urbanised areas, there’s a very popular shopping complex at La Marina, which also hosts a Carrefour hypermarket for food.

Benidorm also has a huge range of European shops, traditional Spanish boutiques and shops selling designer goods.

For a sensory shopping experience, the craft fairs have stall after stall of one of a kind goods, unusual food and they also host live bands between May and September. The regular Friday market is also perfect for a bargain.

Not so much a market as an attraction in its own right, the Medieval Market in April offers handcrafted silks, silver and leather goods as well as craft demonstrations, live performances, dancing, fireworks and theatre.

There are markets in most towns along the coast so you can visit a different market everyday if you want. Find out where and when they are by visiting the Tourist Office in Finestrat.

What you need to know about healthcare in Spain

Scientists have proved that sunshine and the Spanish diet promote a healthy, long life. With a deserved reputation for health, it’s no surprise that the Spanish healthcare system is one of the best in Europe.

Like the NHS, healthcare is free to all citizens. If you take your European Health Insurance Card when you visit, you can be assured of fast, free attention if you need it.

It’s important to note that the old E111 is now being phased out, so use your next trip to Spain as a chance to replace your copy with a European Health Insurance Card.

For minor complaints, Spanish pharmacies (Farmacias) are excellent and many medicines that require a prescription at home can be bought over the counter here.
Look out for the flashing green cross outside the store.

For emergencies, the emergency phone number is 112 and there is a major general hospital an easy ten-minute drive from Finestrat in Villajoyosa. (Phone: 0034 96 685 98 00)
